AI SEO services are recurring work that makes a website findable, understandable and citable by artificial intelligence (AI) search engines such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. A fully managed AI SEO retainer — the engagement we offer — covers nine core deliverables: a citation baseline, entity and schema work, AI-ready content, technical access, authority links, citation tracking, search-result monitoring, revenue reporting and quarterly recalibration.

Google's documentation states that there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary. The scope below is therefore ordinary SEO plus measurement and machine-access work. No deliverable guarantees a citation.

## **Key Takeaways**

- The retainer is nine deliverables, and none guarantees a citation, because Google says no special optimization is needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode.
- Top-10 rankings do not settle citation. [Ahrefs found](https://ahrefs.com/blog/ai-overview-citations-top-10/) that 37.9% of URLs cited in AI Overviews also appeared in the top 10 in a March 2026 report, against about 76% in its July 2025 study.
- Measurement is the weak point. Google's [Generative AI performance report](https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/16984139), live for all sites since August 31, 2026, counts impressions only.
- Our September 28, 2026 crawl of 60 [mettevo.com](http://mettevo.com) URLs found llms.txt present and none of 12 AI user-agent tokens blocked. We have no citation-lift data to publish.
- Judge a retainer after three monthly reports. Google says some changes might take effect in a few hours and others could take several months.

## **What do AI SEO services solve, and what do they not?**

AI answers change click behavior, so the work starts with measurement and access. In March 2025, Pew Research Center tracked the browsing of 900 adults in the United States. Users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits that showed an AI summary, against 15% of visits without one.

Ahrefs analyzed 863,000 keywords and about 4 million AI Overview URLs, and reported on March 2, 2026 that 37.9% of cited URLs also appeared within the first 10 blocks of the results page. Another 31.2% appeared at positions 11 to 100 and 31.0% outside the top 100 results. The July 2025 study found about 76%, but Ahrefs says it has since improved its parsing, so the two figures are not a clean trend.

In our scope, AI SEO services answer four questions: whether the brand is cited, whether bots can read the site, whether entities are unambiguous and whether pages cover the subtopics. Our scope does not guarantee placement or replace classic SEO, which Google says stays relevant for AI features.

## **What are the nine deliverables in an AI SEO retainer?**

The table gives each deliverable's cadence and output, and the sections below give the method and the limits.

Deliverable

Cadence

Output

Month 1, then quarterly

Citation audit across four AI engines.

2\. Entity and schema layer

Month 1, then as pages change

Validated Organization, Service, Person, FAQPage and Review markup.

3\. AI-ready content strategy

Monthly

Question-led content map and freshness calendar.

4\. Technical foundation

Month 1, then monthly

Crawl-access rules, llms.txt and Core Web Vitals fixes.

5\. Authority link building

Monthly

Named list of earned links and brand mentions.

6\. Citation tracking

Monthly

Prompt-by-prompt citation table with run dates.

7\. Search result and AI Overview monitoring

Monthly

8\. Revenue-focused reporting

Monthly

Leads and revenue from organic and AI-referred visits.

9\. Quarterly recalibration

Every quarter

Memo on engine changes and scope changes.

### **1\. AI visibility baseline**

Month 1 starts with a citation audit across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Gemini. The client approves a fixed prompt set covering brand, category, comparison and problem queries. We run each prompt on each engine more than once and log the date, the engine, the brand's status (absent, mentioned or cited with a link) and the URLs cited instead. The output is a dated snapshot plus a list of wrong or missing facts about the brand.

### **2\. Entity and schema layer**

We deploy and validate Organization, Service, Person, FAQPage and Review markup. We also align entity names so the company, its services and its authors read the same on every page. Google says [Organization markup helps disambiguate](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/organization) an organization in search results, and that no special schema.org markup is needed for AI features. Two limits apply. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results on May 7, 2026, so FAQPage markup no longer earns a Google result feature. Google's [review snippet guidelines](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/review-snippet) make pages with Organization markup ineligible for review stars when the reviewed entity controls the reviews about itself.

### **3\. AI-ready content strategy**

Google describes a query fan-out technique that issues multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources. Each target topic therefore gets a map of question-led sections, consistent entity names and a freshness cadence per page type. Some vendors sell this work as generative engine optimization (GEO). On mettevo.com, clicks to our bad-URL explainer rose from 16 to 23 between September 15 to 21 and September 22 to 28, 2026 (Search Console domain property, Performance report, Pages tab, Web search type). Impressions were flat and average position moved from 6.28 to 5.65, so seven extra clicks in a week that includes [Google's September 2026 spam update](https://status.search.google.com/incidents/XhUDXP7A67iHCD2kmbVu) do not isolate a format effect.

### **4\. Technical SEO foundation**

We test crawl access for at least 12 named AI user-agents against robots.txt and the server. OAI-SearchBot surfaces sites in ChatGPT search, GPTBot is used for training and ChatGPT-User makes user-initiated visits, to which robots.txt rules may not apply. A site can allow OAI-SearchBot while disallowing GPTBot. Google says [Google-Extended does not affect inclusion in Google Search](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/google-common-crawlers). Which bots to allow is the client's decision.

We also maintain llms.txt, a Markdown file to provide content that language models can read. Google says no new machine readable files or AI text files are needed for its AI features, so we treat llms.txt as low-effort hygiene with no measured citation effect. Core Web Vitals targets follow Google: Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint under 200 milliseconds and Cumulative Layout Shift below a 0.1 score. If crawlers cannot read key content, the fix may be a rebuild, which carries its own SEO risk (see our [redesign checklist](https://mettevo.com/blog/article/redesign-website-without-losing-seo)).

### **5\. Link building for authority**

We build earned backlinks and brand mentions on third-party pages and report the domains, not only counts. In Ahrefs' study, branded web mentions had the strongest correlation with AI Overview brand visibility at 0.664, against 0.218 for backlinks. Ahrefs notes that correlation is not causation. Google lists buying or selling links for ranking purposes as [link spam](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/essentials/spam-policies), so the retainer targets earned links and mentions rather than purchased ones.

### **6\. Monthly AI citation tracking**

Each month we rerun the baseline prompt set by hand on every engine and log citation presence, cited URL and factual accuracy with the run date. In our check, Ahrefs Brand Radar returned no configured reports for any of our nine Search Console properties, so report setup becomes a month 1 task. Manual runs are small samples, so we read trends across three monthly reports, not one.

### **7\. Search result and AI Overview monitoring**

Each month we log the search engine results page (SERP) for every target query, noting whether an AI Overview appears and whether the domain is cited. Google reports AI Overviews and AI Mode inside the Web search type of the Search Console Performance report. Search Console also has a [Generative AI performance report](https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/16984139), rolled out to all websites as of August 31, 2026, that shows impressions by page, country, device and date. In our data, the Ahrefs-connected Search Console feed carries no AI-surface dimension.

### **8\. Revenue-focused reporting**

Reports tie organic and AI-referred visits to leads and revenue instead of impressions or rank screenshots. Our decision rule is that SEO is working when non-branded clicks to pages that bring leads rise for three consecutive months and the report explains every drop with data. The [seven-metric monthly report test](https://mettevo.com/blog/article/monthly-report-test-seo-agency-working) lists the checks, including the branded versus non-branded click split. AI-referred visits count only where analytics records the referrer.

### **9\. Quarterly recalibration**

Every quarter we rerun the baseline, review engine and documentation changes and update the prompt set and priorities, because engines and documentation change. Ahrefs measured the top-10 overlap with AI Overview citations at about 76% in July 2025 and 37.9% in a March 2026 report (Ahrefs studies). Google ended FAQ rich results on May 7, 2026, and its Generative AI performance report reached all websites as of August 31, 2026 (Google documentation). The output is a short memo listing what changed and what we changed in response.

## **What does a Managed Growth retainer not include?**

The scope excludes four things, each tied to a public rule or a data limit:

- Guaranteed citations, placements or rankings. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode have no additional requirements or special optimizations, and that [structured data does not guarantee](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/sd-policies) a feature will appear.
- Purchased or exchanged links. Google's [spam policies](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/essentials/spam-policies) list exchanging money, goods or services for links as link spam.
- Markup for content users cannot see. Google's [structured data guidelines](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/sd-policies) say not to mark up content that is not visible to readers of the page.
- Click or query data for Google's AI features. The Generative AI performance report counts impressions only, so we label any other figure as an estimate.

## **What should you expect in months 1, 3 and 6?**

These are planning milestones, not measured outcomes: we have not measured time to citation across our portfolio. Google's timing guidance is wide, from a few hours to several months, so we judge trends after three monthly reports.

Month

What ships

What the report can show

Month 1

Baseline audit, access fixes, entity and schema layer, tracking set-up.

Starting citation presence on the agreed prompt set.

Month 3

Question-led content live, first earned links, first quarterly recalibration.

Three monthly data points on citations and AI Overview impressions.

Month 6

Second recalibration and a refresh cycle for key pages.

Trend against the baseline for citations, non-branded clicks and leads.

## **Mettevo's own audit: what it shows and where it stops**

On September 28, 2026, our audit used the SEOContentForge/0.1 crawler with JavaScript rendering off. The crawler fetched 60 URLs: 58 returned pages with status 200 and two returned redirects (status 308). Of the 58 pages, 55 sit under /blog. None lacked a title, an h1, a canonical tag or structured data. Organization markup appeared on 57 of the 58 pages and FAQPage markup on 15 of them. The same run probed 12 AI user-agent tokens against [robots.txt](https://mettevo.com/robots.txt) and found none blocked, and [llms.txt](https://mettevo.com/llms.txt) is present.

As we read the file on October 22, 2026, eleven of the 12 tokens are named in robots.txt with an explicit Allow rule. The twelfth, Claude-User, is not named and is permitted by the default group. The 12 tokens are GPTBot, ChatGPT-User, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Perplexity-User, ClaudeBot, Claude-User, Google-Extended, Applebot-Extended, Bytespider, CCBot and meta-externalagent.

These results describe access, not outcomes. The crawl fetched the home page under two URL variants, about-us, the blog index and 54 articles, so service pages and their markup were not measured. The same crawl flagged 8 titles over 60 characters, 5 meta descriptions outside 120 to 165 characters and 34 orphan articles. A robots.txt probe tests rules, not server logs, so it does not show that any bot fetched a page. The crawl tests that structured data exists, not that it validates. The crawler runs no JavaScript, so every element it found was in the server response. One snapshot cannot show a trend.

## **FAQ**

### **What are AI SEO services?**

AI SEO services are recurring SEO work that makes a site findable, readable and citable by AI search such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. Google says no special optimization is required, so the work centers on measurement, crawl access, markup and content structure.

### **What's included in an AI SEO retainer?**

A full AI SEO retainer, like the Managed Growth engagement we offer, includes nine deliverables: an AI visibility baseline, an entity and schema layer, AI-ready content strategy, technical foundations, authority link building, monthly citation tracking, search result and AI Overview monitoring, revenue-focused reporting and quarterly recalibration. It excludes guaranteed citations and purchased links.

### **How is AI SEO different from traditional SEO?**

Traditional SEO reports are usually judged on rankings and clicks, while AI SEO adds citation presence, entity clarity and answer-level measurement. The foundations overlap, because Google says SEO best practices remain relevant for AI features.

### **Do AI SEO services replace traditional SEO?**

No. Google says the best practices for SEO remain relevant for AI features. In Ahrefs' March 2026 study, 37.9% of URLs cited in AI Overviews also appeared in the top 10 and 31.2% appeared at positions 11 to 100, so rankings still feed citation without deciding it. [AI SEO](https://mettevo.com/seo/generative-engine-optimization) adds measurement and access work on top of the SEO fundamentals.

### **What results should an AI SEO retainer produce?**

A disciplined AI SEO retainer, including the one we run, reports results in three levels. Outputs are within the agency's control: the nine deliverables shipped on schedule. Influenced outcomes are measured: citation presence on a fixed prompt set, AI Overview impressions and non-branded clicks. Business outcomes are leads and revenue. Mettevo has no measured citation lift to publish, so judge a retainer on outputs first and trends after three months.

### **How long does AI SEO take to show results?**

Google's SEO Starter Guide says some changes might take effect in a few hours while others could take several months, and suggests waiting a few weeks to assess results. [OpenAI says](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots) a robots.txt update can take about 24 hours to reach its systems. Mettevo plans a baseline in month 1 and judges trends after three monthly reports.
