A ChatGPT visibility tracker is software that runs fixed prompts through ChatGPT on a schedule and records whether answers name or link to your brand. A ChatGPT visibility service is the work that changes those results. In our September 10, 2026 audit, the tracker we ran could not tie one citation to a Google Search Console impression change.

## **TL;DR**

- A tracker measures and a service changes the signal. Ask what will be different on your site by day 30 and who ships it.
- Four products share the label: monitoring tools, consultancy, managed optimization and hybrids.
- Every visibility number is a sample. Detecting a rise from 10% to 20% takes about 200 prompts per period (5% significance, 80% power).
- No provider can guarantee a citation. Google says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking, and OpenAI says ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers.

## **What is a ChatGPT visibility tracker, and how does it differ from rank tracking?**

A ChatGPT visibility tracker reports two numbers per prompt set: how often ChatGPT names your brand (a mention) and how often it links to your domain (a citation). Traditional search engine optimization (SEO) rank tracking records a link's position in a results list. A ChatGPT answer is text from an artificial intelligence (AI) model, so the unit becomes a rate across sampled prompts.

## **What are ChatGPT visibility services? Four types sold under one label**

ChatGPT visibility services are paid work to raise how often ChatGPT names and cites a brand. The label covers four products: monitoring tools (also sold as AI brand monitoring platforms or AI brand visibility monitoring tools), consultancy, managed optimization and hybrids.

One question separates a service from a repackaged dashboard: what will be different on my site by day 30, and who ships it? A list of insights means monitoring, whatever the proposal calls it.

## **What should a real ChatGPT visibility service deliver?**

A real service delivers five things, each with an artifact you can open. No artifact means a promise, not a product.

1. **Prompt-set curation.** A versioned list of buyer prompts from your sales calls and support tickets, tagged by intent. Include category prompts (discovery), not only branded ones (recall). Example: "Which project management tool suits a 50-person agency?"
2. **Per-engine measurement.** ChatGPT with search on, plus Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google's AI Overviews, each reported separately. In the Toronto preprint, cited-domain overlap between engine pairs ranged from 0.088 to 0.251 on two consumer verticals, so a blended score hides large differences.
3. **Entity hygiene and schema.** Consistent names, descriptions and facts across your site and third-party profiles, plus open crawler access. [Google's documentation](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) says its AI features need no special schema, so treat markup as accuracy hygiene, not a lever.
4. **Content restructuring for extractability.** Answer-first paragraphs, question headings, comparison tables and dated, sourced facts on pages your prompts target. Hold comparable pages back as controls.
5. **Monthly reporting.** Mention, citation and accuracy rates per engine with intervals, competitor share, chatgpt.com referral sessions, a change log and a list of what cannot be attributed.

[OpenAI's crawler documentation](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots) says sites opted out of its search crawler "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers." Our robots.txt, read on October 27, 2026, names all three crawlers below with Allow: / and no rule blocking the site root:

OpenAI search:    OAI-SearchBot
OpenAI training:  GPTBot
User-initiated:   ChatGPT-User

## **How do you measure your brand's visibility in ChatGPT?**

To track brand visibility in ChatGPT, sample it: run a fixed set of buyer prompts several times under logged conditions, then report rates with intervals. We found no OpenAI report that counts how often ChatGPT names or cites a brand. OpenAI's [help article for publishers and developers](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/12627856-publishers-and-developers-faq) describes one first-party signal, a utm\_source=chatgpt.com tag on referral links.

The smallest test we would run before buying anything has four steps; our [AI visibility self-audit](https://mettevo.com/blog/article/ai-visibility-audit) runs a ten-prompt version:

1. Write 25 prompts from sales calls and support tickets, covering education, recommendation, comparison, pricing and support.
2. Fix the conditions: ChatGPT with search on, one model setting, one logged-in state, one location and one day.
3. Run each prompt three times, 75 runs in total, and log every run with the header below. Three is our rule, not a published standard.
4. Count a prompt as a hit when the brand appears in at least two of its three runs, then report mention rate, citation rate and factual accuracy.

date, model, search\_on, logged\_in, location, prompt\_id, run, brand\_named, brand\_linked, facts\_correct

### **How do trackers turn answers into a score?**

Link to your domain

Which page, and whether users see it

Share of voice

Your mentions among all brands named

Which competitors are in the set

### **How many prompts are enough?**

Prompts per period

95% interval around an observed 20%

Smallest detectable rise from a 10% baseline

25

9% to 39%

to about 45%

100

13% to 29%

to about 25%

200

15% to 26%

to about 20%

The detectable rises use the two-proportion sample-size formula at 5% two-sided significance and 80% power, so the 25-prompt row is approximate. The figures assume independent prompts, so real uncertainty is larger. A five-prompt allowance, as on one tracker's smallest plan, is worse: one hit is 20%, with an interval of 4% to 62%.

A citation count is not an outcome. In our [September 10, 2026 audit](https://mettevo.com/blog/article/ai-visibility-tools-what-they-measure-and-miss) of the mettevo.com Search Console property, impressions fell 63%, from 390,704 in February 2026 to 146,119 in August 2026. The tracker we ran hands-on could not say whether AI citations explained the drop. The sample is one property, one seven-month window and one tracker, and the data cannot separate AI Overviews from a core update or seasonality. Four other trackers were reviewed on public pages only.

## **Which six questions should you ask a provider on a sales call?**

These six questions test the work, not the deck. Each comes with a good and a weak answer. For the wider agency checklist, see [how to choose an AI SEO agency](https://mettevo.com/blog/article/how-to-choose-an-ai-seo-agency).

1. **Which of the four types is this, and who changes my site?** Good: the type, a named implementer and what ships by day 30. Weak: "insights".
2. **Where do the prompts come from, and how many are there?** Good: your sales calls, a version number and a count per period. Weak: "proprietary prompts" reused for every client.
3. **Under what conditions was each answer collected?** Good: model, search setting, login state, location and date, in a log you can open. Weak: a bare score. OpenAI's [web search documentation](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/guides/tools-web-search) says the model can choose whether to search unless a developer requires it.
4. **How is the score calculated, and where are the rates behind it?** Good: mention, citation and accuracy rates per engine with intervals, plus written weights. Weak: one number from 0 to 100.
5. **What will you change, and where is the change log?** Good: dated entries naming each page, markup, profile and outreach change, with comparable pages held back. Weak: a deck with no page addresses.
6. **What do I keep if we stop, and what result would make us stop?** Good: exported prompt list, run logs and change log, and a written stop rule for day 90. Weak: data locked in a dashboard.

## **What red flags separate a service from a repackaged dashboard?**

- **"Guaranteed ChatGPT citations."** [Google's guidance](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/do-i-need-seo) says "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google." OpenAI says that ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers, so advertising does not buy a place in them. I would not sign a contract that promises a citation.
- **"Rank #1 in ChatGPT."** An answer is generated text, and a screenshot is one answer to one prompt on one day. Rewording the question changes which domains are cited, as the preprint above found.
- **"Instant AI SEO fix."** [OpenAI's crawler documentation](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots) says it can take about 24 hours from a robots.txt update for its systems to adjust.
- **Unexplained scoring.** [Google's hiring guidance](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/do-i-need-seo) says to be careful if a company is "secretive or won't clearly explain what they intend to do." A composite score with no formula, prompt list or run count cannot be audited.
- **A report that ends at the dashboard.** No change log, no named implementer and no page addresses means the work stopped at measurement.

## **How much do ChatGPT visibility services cost? What drives the price**

We publish no price here, because a number without scope is not comparable. Tool licenses, project fees and retainers price the same work differently, so a quote should state four variables.

- **Prompt-set size and repeats.** 200 prompts on 4 engines with 3 repeats is 2,400 runs per round, against 75 for the 25-prompt test. In our [September 14, 2026 pricing review](https://mettevo.com/blog/article/ai-visibility-tools-what-they-measure-and-miss), one tracker's plans ran from 5 prompts to 83 or more.
- **Engines and models covered.** One tracker's entry tier queried ChatGPT only, another's covered four engines, and a third listed 3 models on lower tiers against 13 at the top.
- **Run frequency.** Plans that publish a frequency mostly list daily runs, and one tracker published none.
- **Implementation versus monitoring.** Hours spent restructuring pages, shipping markup and earning third-party coverage separate a retainer from a license.

A budget tier is a tool license with a small prompt allowance, a project fee buys a baseline and roadmap, and an enterprise retainer adds engines, markets and implementation hours.

### **Is ChatGPT brand visibility worth paying for?**

Pay after three conditions hold. First, OpenAI's search crawler is allowed: ChatGPT search visibility starts with access, and a site opted out of that crawler is not shown in ChatGPT search answers. Second, the 75-run test shows competitors named where you are absent. Third, someone can ship changes within a month. If you already appear in most prompts, buy monitoring only. Measure demand yourself, from chatgpt.com referral sessions and what buyers say on sales calls.

## **What should a 90-day ChatGPT visibility engagement include?**

A 90-day engagement should end with a re-measurement and a decision, not a promise.

Window

What ships

Artifact you receive

Decision

Days 1 to 14

Crawler-access check; 25-prompt diagnostic; entity fact sheet

Access table, prompt document, run log, list of wrong facts

Which pages and prompts to prioritize

Days 15 to 45

Priority pages restructured; profiles and markup corrected; comparable pages held back

Change log with page addresses; control-page list

None until re-measurement

Days 46 to 75

Third-party coverage outreach; prompt set expanded to 100 or more

Target list with status; second run log

Is the set large enough? 100 prompts detect about a 15-point rise

Days 76 to 90

Same prompts, same conditions, rerun

Report with intervals and referral sessions; data export

Continue only if the new interval no longer overlaps the baseline on two engines

Our [generative engine optimization service](https://mettevo.com/seo/generative-engine-optimization) page says initial citations can appear within 4 to 8 weeks of content restructuring and schema deployment. It adds that consistent growth across engines takes 2 to 4 months. We publish no dataset behind those ranges, so treat them as estimates. Our October 26, 2026 self-audit found no dated citation log for mettevo.com, so we publish no citation rates for our own site. Mettevo sells these services, so weigh this article accordingly. ## **FAQ**

### **Can you track your brand mentions in ChatGPT?**

Yes, but only in samples. We found no OpenAI report that counts how often ChatGPT names a brand, so providers run fixed prompts and report rates. OpenAI says ChatGPT adds a utm\_source=chatgpt.com tag to referral links, so analytics tools can separate those visits.

### **How much do ChatGPT visibility services cost?**

Cost follows prompt count, engines covered, run frequency and how much implementation is included. Tool licenses, project fees and retainers price those differently, so a quote is comparable only when it states all four. We list no figures because a number without scope misleads. Ask every provider to price the same 100-prompt set.

### **Is ChatGPT brand visibility worth paying for?**

Pay after three conditions hold: OpenAI's search crawler is allowed, a free 75-run test shows competitors named where you are absent, and someone can ship changes within a month. If you already appear in most prompts, buy monitoring only. Without a change log and a named implementer, you are paying for a dashboard.
