AI visibility tools are subscription trackers, such as Ahrefs Brand Radar, Profound, Otterly, Scrunch, and Peec, that run prompts against ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews to measure how often a brand gets cited. None of them, as of a first-hand audit on September 10, 2026, connects that citation to the impressions a site loses in Google Search Console (GSC).
TL;DR (Too Long, Didn't Read)
AI visibility tools track how often ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and similar artificial intelligence (AI) systems cite or mention a brand. They do not track Google Search Console impressions.
Entry-level prices on the plans that publish one, checked September 14, 2026, span $29 a month (Otterly's Lite plan) to $300 a month (Scrunch's Starter plan, billed month-to-month). Peec AI does not publish a dollar figure at all.
Search Console's own Generative AI performance report, live worldwide since August 31, 2026, shows AI Overview and AI Mode impressions for free. It has no clicks column and no query column, though.
On a first-hand audit run September 10, 2026, none of the five citation trackers, and nothing inside Search Console itself, joined an AI citation to a specific Search Console impression change.
Mettevo's own Search Console property lost 63 percent of impressions between February and August 2026 while its average ranking position improved, the exact pattern this missing join would need to explain.
What Are AI Visibility Tools?
Only about one-third of consumers say generative AI chatbots work as well as traditional search engines for learning new information, according to a Gartner survey published January 20, 2026. Brands still need both channels measured side by side, which is what this tool category exists to do.
AI visibility tools are software subscriptions that measure how often, and how favorably, a brand is mentioned inside answers generated by artificial intelligence (AI) systems such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity. They also cover AI-generated search features like Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. They work by running a fixed list of prompts against those systems on a schedule, then scoring results for brand mentions, citation sources and competitor share of voice. The category is also called generative engine optimization (GEO) tracking.
What these tools measure is a citation, a moment when an AI system names a brand, links to its page, or pulls a fact from its content. What none of the five products checked for this piece measures is what happens to that citation afterward. Did the person reading the AI answer click through? Did the page's organic impressions in Google Search Console move? A citation count and a Search Console report currently live in two separate systems, and no vendor joins them into one line of data.
How Do You Track Brand Visibility in ChatGPT?
Tracking brand visibility inside ChatGPT works by sampling, not by pulling a report the way Search Console does. A tool sends a fixed set of buyer-phrased prompts into ChatGPT on a repeating schedule. Each run records whether the brand appears, which sources ChatGPT cites, and how competitors named in the same answers compare. All five trackers automate that loop across ChatGPT and at least one other engine.
The free version of this is manual. Write ten to twenty realistic questions, ask them yourself inside ChatGPT once a week, and log the answers in a spreadsheet. It will not catch everything a paid tool's broader prompt set would, but it costs nothing, and it is the fastest way to sanity-check a paid tool's numbers before signing a contract.
The Tools Compared
Five products come up most often in AI visibility comparisons published in September 2026: Ahrefs Brand Radar, Profound, Otterly.AI, Scrunch, and Peec AI. All five run the same basic loop: scheduled prompts, scored citations, competitor comparison, delivered through a web dashboard and, for Ahrefs, also an application programming interface (API). These trackers usually sit next to, not inside, the rest of a search engine optimization (SEO) stack; see our comparison of SEO workflow automation tools for how the pieces fit together.

How Much Do AI Visibility Trackers Cost?
Prices among the four vendors that publish one range widely. Otterly's Lite plan, at $29 a month, is the cheapest entry point checked. Scrunch's Starter plan is the most expensive at that tier, $300 a month billed month-to-month or $250 a month billed annually, according to each company's own pricing page, checked September 14, 2026. Profound's cheapest tier queries ChatGPT only, and every other AI engine sits behind its $399-a-month Growth plan or a custom Enterprise contract.
Ahrefs prices Brand Radar separately from its core Lite, Standard, Advanced and Enterprise plans. A standalone package starts at $199 a month, and Ahrefs also bundles a small number of AI prompts into its main plans directly, five on Lite scaling up to 83 or more on Enterprise. Peec AI remains the outlier. Its own pricing page lists four named tiers, but no dollar figure next to any of them as of the same check date.
Which AI Visibility Tool Is Best?
There is no single best AI visibility tool, because the five products above solve different problems at different budgets. Profound gives daily prompt frequency on every published tier, including its $99 Starter plan. Scrunch covers the widest engine list but publishes no refresh frequency at all. Otterly's $29 Lite plan fits one brand watching ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews on a tight budget. Ahrefs Brand Radar fits agencies already paying for Ahrefs' core SEO plans, since prompts come bundled in. Run the one-week evaluation below before signing anything, and let your own prompt list and budget decide.
Can Google Search Console Show AI Overview Data?
Yes, since August 31, 2026, when Google finished rolling out its Generative AI performance report to every Search Console property worldwide. The report shows impressions for pages that appeared inside AI Overviews or AI Mode, broken down by page, country, device and date, according to Google's own Search Console Help documentation. It costs nothing beyond a verified Search Console property, which almost every site already has.
The report also has one large gap. It has no clicks column and no query column. You can see that a page was shown inside an AI Overview: the date, the country, the device. You cannot see how many people clicked through, or which query triggered it. Google's own documentation lists impressions as the report's only metric.
That gap is not the only one. Search Console's older Performance report shows clicks, impressions, click-through rate and average position, but its filter separates results into four buckets: web, image, video and news. Google's Search Analytics API documentation lists six accepted values, adding discover and googleNews, neither exposed in that filter. Pulling Search Console through the Ahrefs API for the same audit on September 10, 2026, we got the same four values, with no option for AI Overviews or AI Mode.
Neither report, the old one or the new one, tags a row as "this impression came from an AI feature, and here is the query that triggered it." AI impressions live in one report. Clicks and queries live in another. Nothing connects them yet. We cover the property-level mechanics of watching both reports over time, separate from ranking checks, in our guide to ranking, optimizing, and tracking visibility in Google's AI results.
The Gap None of Them Closes
No AI visibility tool on the market connects a citation inside an AI answer to a specific change in a site's Google Search Console impressions. A first-hand audit Mettevo ran on September 10, 2026, confirms that, and a claim this flat needs a stated boundary: what got tested, and what did not.
The audit checked three things directly. First, Ahrefs Brand Radar's own API. It returns nothing until a report exists, and a report only exists after a POST request creates one and returns a report_id, per Ahrefs' own API reference. There is no ad-hoc endpoint that works without that ID on file. Second, the same product's web dashboard, a different door. Type a domain, click Analyze, and it returns a read immediately, no report_id and no setup required, per Ahrefs' own help documentation.
Third, Google Search Console data pulled through the Ahrefs API repeats the same four search types, with no AI-surface dimension. None of the three, alone or combined, connects one specific citation to one specific impression change. The API needs configuration the dashboard does not, and both stay blind to AI Overviews as a distinct traffic source. Every path we checked stops at a different wall.
This matters in practice. Mettevo's own Search Console property, pulled the same day through the same Ahrefs connection, showed impressions falling from 390,704 in February 2026 to 146,119 in August, a 63 percent drop. Average position improved from 26.75 to 23.41 over the same seven months, and click-through rate nearly doubled, from 7.78 percent to 14.37 percent. Read that CTR figure carefully. A blended 14.37 percent at an average position of 23 is not what a position-23 listing earns: a few brand queries ranking first and converting heavily lift the CTR average while barely moving the position average. The pair describes the property, not any page in it. Visibility fell by nearly two-thirds even as rankings improved. Neither Brand Radar nor Search Console can tell us whether AI citations are why. Both only show that the drop happened.
This is one property, over one seven-month window, checked through one API connection. It does not isolate AI Overviews from a core algorithm update, a seasonal shift, or anything else that moved impressions in the same months. It does not cover every AI-visibility product on the market, only the five compared above, and it does not rule out an enterprise feature behind a paid demo we skipped. It shows that a real site can carry a 63 percent impression drop and a stack of citation-tracking subscriptions at once, with no report joining the two.
How to Evaluate an AI Visibility Tool in a Week
Run this checklist over one week before signing an annual contract with any AI visibility tool:
Write 15 to 20 prompts a real buyer would type, not your brand name, and keep the list identical across every tool you trial.
Confirm which AI engines are included at the price tier you can afford. Profound's $99 Starter plan covers ChatGPT only; Otterly's $29 Lite plan covers four engines.
If you plan to use the API rather than the dashboard, test that path separately first. Ahrefs Brand Radar's API and its web dashboard behave differently; a workflow built around the wrong one returns nothing.
Pull your own Search Console impressions and clicks for the pages the tool claims are getting cited, by hand, for a small sample. No vendor joins these two numbers yet.
Check how far back the citation history runs. Ahrefs says Brand Radar searches AI responses collected since August 2024 for Google AI Overviews; confirm other vendors' windows too.
Decide based on the gap the tool does not close, not the dashboard shown on the sales call. Every product here measures citations; none measures what a citation is worth in Search Console impressions.
If you would rather hand this evaluation, and the ongoing tracking, to a team that treats the gap as a research question first, that work is part of what Mettevo's SEO services cover.
FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
Do AI visibility tools replace Google Search Console?
No. AI visibility tools measure citations inside AI answers, while Search Console measures organic impressions, clicks, and rankings. Google's Generative AI performance report, live globally since August 31, 2026, adds AI Overview and AI Mode impressions to Search Console. It still will not tell you whether one specific citation caused one specific impression change.
What does GEO mean in this context?
GEO stands for generative engine optimization, the practice of shaping content so AI systems cite it in their answers, rather than ranking it as a blue link. AI visibility tools are the measurement layer for GEO, the same role rank trackers play for SEO.
Is Ahrefs Brand Radar included in a standard Ahrefs subscription?
Not entirely. Ahrefs sells Brand Radar mainly as a standalone product, starting at $199 a month, or as custom prompt packages, according to Ahrefs' own pricing page, checked September 14, 2026. Paid Ahrefs plans also bundle AI prompts, from five on the Lite plan up to 83 or more on Enterprise.
How often do AI visibility trackers refresh their data?
Daily, on most of the plans that publish a frequency at all. Otterly.AI and Peec AI both list daily tracking on their pricing pages, checked September 14, 2026. Profound lists daily prompt frequency on all three published tiers, Starter included. Scrunch's pricing page names no refresh frequency anywhere, so for that one the honest answer is that it is not published.
Can I check AI visibility for free?
Yes, in a limited way. Ahrefs offers a free AI Visibility Checker on its own site: no signup, no credit card, and a one-time snapshot rather than ongoing tracking. Google's Generative AI performance report inside Search Console is also free for any verified property, though it only covers Google's own AI features.
